One of the things that we were looking for when we began this quest was the middle of nowhere. Well, let me tell you, we found it in South Dakota...and lots of it.
We left Nebraska on Friday and drove north on US-83. Now you have to realize, this is not an interstate highway. We're talking two lane roads. These "back roads" are not bad. They are generally wide and out here they are really straight. Driving is easy at lower speeds while we take in the view.
The view in South Dakota greeted us as in the photo.

Everybody needs to see this in person at least once in their life. The photo barely does it justice. I can see now why it is called "Big Sky" country. This is breathtaking.
We are in a campground that is 73 miles from the nearest grocery store. We are here for a month. You can be sure that we are planning our trips into town carefully. In a way it's nice not being able to run get something every time a thought occurs. It has been a long time since I had to plan ahead as I am having to do now.
Now for the weather report...it's not a complete Karin Blog without one...right?!?!? You would never believe that it is almost July. The lows at night are near 50 with highs during the day only in the 70s (well almost 80 today). As for the humidity, the sign at the welcome station said it best "Maybe". It is definitely dry. The wind is out of the south and is surprisingly cool. It is not unusual for me to still be in a sweater at lunchtime...just call me a wimp!!
Now, being form the South, I expect bad winds (especially those that swirl badly) to be accompanied by dark clouds and rain. Well this is not the case in South Dakota. A short time ago, there was a sudden wind that collapsed our awning. I saw the swirl of the dust in the wind out the back window and can only imagine that this was a dirt devil. Apparently, these things can get really strong. We survived and all is well...the awning is now tied down as it should have been all along.
We're looking forward to a productive month as we work on programming and business details. Life will remain commonplace only until we find something interesting to mix it up with. We are in a great place to find those things...I'll keep you posted.
