What a mess!!

We traveled from Chattanooga to Athens, AL on Thursday...not a good day for packing up and traveling. It was pouring rain!! Luckily while we waited for service on the camper to be completed, the rain almost stopped. That at least made the travel a little easier.

North Alabama had water in more placed than I have seen in a long time. It has been years since there was this kind of flooding. Luckily, it is in what are now empty fields and pasture lands. The cows in some places stood only on the high spots. The water was not deep...just lots of it.

We arrived to water in Rod's Mom's basement. That was the worst place it could have been...this basement is not empty and almost everything was on the floor. Thursday evening was spent just trying to stop the flow of new water into the room. We had marginal luck with that. Friday we found the problem...someone had buried the ends of the French drain along the side of the house. Once uncovered, gallons of water flowed from the system. I hated to think that all that water would have had to come across the basement floor had the problem not been found.

The basement began to dry immediately and we set to work picking up and sorting through wet stuff. The treasures we have found in old pictures and other childhood items has been such fun. We will spend two or three more days working on this. We hope to have this project finished before we move on...so much for schedules!!

On a lighter note, last week in Ga, I was treated to the one thing I miss the most about the South. Camellias in December. There are not many placed that can boast of fresh flowers form the garden in the Thanksgiving table...and often at Christmas too. This one was particularly pretty.
