Yesterday we traveled from Rapid City to Mitchell South Dakota. An easy trip of about 300 miles. Traffic was light and the weather was not bad...at least it did not rain on us all the way. Mitchell was our first stop with our desire to see the Corn Palace. This is a building that was originally built in 1892 that has always had the outside decorated with corn...no I am not kidding. Only during WWII were some of the "murals" painted rather than using all corn.
The place was not much to see at first glance. Second glance drew a since of awe for the work in the murals. The photos are only a glimpse of the many scenes that are constructed each year.
Getting ready to travel yesterday was really stressful. I was surprised how in two and a half months I had forgotten everything about how and where to pack things so they don't shift and break. Well I did pretty well with the majority of things...then we hit some really rough roads. These roads make the laws of physics only suggestions. You can never predict what will go where as you bounce along. Several things that are usually easy to keep in place went sailing and my spices that never stay put did not budge. Like I say...Physics works as a suggestion when traveling.
Our schedule took a nose dive this morning when we awoke to the sound of rain on the roof. When we awoke the third or fourth time, we decided that we'd stay here to day rather than traveling in the rain...sounds like an excuse to go back to sleep to me...and we did.
It's been a really quiet day for us. Really relaxing after our stressful start.
You'll hear from me more often as we travel. Tomorrow it's the Mall of America. Friday or Saturday, the Wisconsin Dells. Off to more of an adventure.
