Living and working in a camper is so different than being in a house. Aside from the obvious differences, any project takes on a completely new dimension. Whether it's the space...or lack thereof..or the structure...or again, lack thereof..things are not as simply done as they would be in a house.
In the bathroom there was an open shelf above the potty. Well, as soon as I saw that six months ago, I knew that I wanted a closed cabinet in its place. When the TP was prominently displayed on this shelf four days ago, the closed cabinet was quick to come.
First we had to deal with size. Not just anything would fit and custom building was not an option. Luckily Lowe's had one that was a good size for the available space...several that were mere inches too big...but luckily one that was only an inch (or so) too small.
Next the question of structure came into play. You must remember that this thing must stay on the wall while bouncing over the rough roads of this great country at 65 miles per hour...and believe me there are quite some bumps out there. The wallboard in the camper is thinner than Luann board...that's really thin!! Attaching to the wall was out of the question. So out came the wallboard...in one piece so it could be put back in...to give us a view of the structure beneath. As you can imagine, we were greeted by NOTHING!!!...other than another piece of the same wallboard less then 2" away.
Studs went in to offer support for the new cabinet...studs that had to be attached with "L" brackets as there was nothing sufficient into which to drive a nail..studs of special wood for the depth we had available...this was already beginning to get complicated...although not too expensive..yet!
With the structure in place, the wallboard was again maneuvered around the potty...oh yeah, I didn't tell you that we did not take the potty out before we started this...way too much work. Once we got the new brad nailer to work (that took three trips to Lowe's), the wallboard was again attached...let the next person figure out where those brads are...they are just lucky I didn't have the gorilla glue handy.
Well after two days and five trips to Lowe's we hung the cabinet on the new studs and all seems well for now...we haven't moved yet!! At this point, we'll hope for the best...or at least take all the liquids out and brace something above the potty before we go...I'm such an optimist.
The trim will go back in later. I guess we're still waiting to be sure it will stay put in normal use.
And this is what all the work was about...looks simple..that's what we though before we started. We are now rethinking the other projects we had planned for this place.
