I had not planned to come back that way since I could take the interstate to Atlanta for my flight home Saturday morning. But, the allure of the Georgia country side proved too much for me.
One sight I had not seen in a long time was cotton waiting to be ginned.
This is how it comes off the truck. This is loose cotton boles. They stay together purely from the pressure with which they were packed into the truck when they were picked. This is a long way from people with cotton sacks that they dragged along filling by hand. A little further along the route the crop turned to peanuts. No photos; but, the piles of dust from the shells caught my eye. I sure it was just waiting to be trucked away for another industrial use.
A little further north yielded pecans. The harvest was in full swing. There is NOTHING better than pecans just harvested, shelled and packaged. Those did not last long!!
If you ever wonder where your food and other industrial supplies come from, take a trip along America's back roads... especially in the Fall. The enormity and variety will amaze you.
