I have decided that the only way I'm going to figure out how to grow things here is to try. So, now for this year's experiments.
Here is the garden on June 20, 2009...yes folks, it's the middle of June and it's only this far along.
I bought plants yesterday at Lowes. Wow... this is "instant gardening". No waiting for seeds to sprout and wondering if the little things will make it through a heavy rain. I'll sure do this again.
There are cauliflowers, lettuces, basil and strawberries under the plastic. Now, the plastic is there to keep the really intense sun off of these plants. The basil and lettuce love it. I though the cauliflower and strawberries would too...I don't know why. Call it a hunch.
The second bed is squash, zucchini and spinach. I figure the spinach will be done when the squash gets big enough to crowd it out....or it will shade it...we'll see. This bed will not need to protection that the other will. The deer did not bother the squash last year. Seems they don't like the prickly leaves....YEA!!
The other bed has cucumbers that will grow on a trellis of chicken wire...that actually worked well last year...something else learned.
I also planted cantaloupe and acorn squash. I truly expect the bed to be completely overrun with vines and big plants by August. The photos will be interesting...but it looks nice now.... what do you expect from an amateur!!
I just could not let those beds lie idle this year.
