I am on a new kick with waste. Plastic bags...sandwich, quart and gallon bags that we have for so long taken for granted.
Watching the land fill grow is depressing. I started thinking about all those plastic bags that we use once and throw away either with some spoiled food still remaining in it or empty. What an issue. Even if what was in it could deteriorate, it can't interact with the micro-organisms of the system because it is trapped in this bag...which might break; but what if it doesn't.
So, in my small effort, I have begun two things.
First, produce that needs to be wrapped before it is put back into the fridge goes into a plastic container that can be washed and resused repeatedly. So what if it takes a little more space? Space in the fridge is not an issue.
Second, what ever happened to saving bread bags? Remember that from the 70s when your sence of this being a "good bag" outweighed the convenience of pulling another bag from the box? These are going to the landfill anyway, why not postpone that trip and use that plastic bag again...to wrap the dog's bone for storage...to hold the tiles that you cut last and now need to store...to collect up old costume jewelry that is slated to give to the theater group...to store a paint brush that you plan to use again...to collect you're child's toys...
So many uses. Just think if we all replaced one new bag a week with this used bag how many fewer items would end up in the landfill. Pass it on!!
