A wonderful day for us... not so good for the birds.
We have had a next of robins in a tree near the house this summer. For several months we have watched the parents and listened to the little ones. This is significant since in the past three years, we have had very few birds and the robins only passed through. Something has changed with the weather or the available food and water. Whatever it is, robins abound this year.
So, I wondered just the other day about these babies and their first attempts to fly. Well, today Chester was not hungry. He did not ask for food a single time. Noting that he is not sick... albeit a little hot today... we think one of the baby birds was his breakfast. Makes sense. Suddenly the nest is very quiet and the parent birds are gone.
Chester does not have it in himself any longer to climb out to get the babies. It must have been the first of the flying lessons.
Such is life in the world of cats and birds.... especially birds that build nests too close to the house and over the driveway.
As for us... we worked in the office getting things ready to be away later this week. We did take a bread to clear a tree from the front yard. The chainsaw lasted through a dozen cuts. When it would cut no more, the tractor stepped in to lift the remaining tree and stump out of the way.
One more job done. It feels really good to get that physical exercise.
