Although often during the day I have things that I want to tell you, by the time evening rolls around I forget what I wanted to say.
Well, two things have happened... 1) I have found mobile blogging. I can post from my phone... any time.... that could be dangerous. 2) I have thought of a reason to talk to you every night... dinner.
My sister and I seem to always discuss what's for dinner when we visit on the phone. I am always jealous when she talks of what is coming from her garden. I have found that I can do some pretty amazing things even though I work with things out of bags, vegie bins, freezer bags and cans.
I am hoping that by getting started with tonight's kitchen adventures, I will remember other events of the day to share with you.
So, tonight was steak night. We have both been hungry for steak for several days. A stop at the grocery store netted two nice 1/2 lb top sirloins for less than $10 (total). I decided to do what I always hear on Country Test Kitchen. I patted the meat dry before putting it on the grill. All would have gone well except that I ran out of gas.... Oh well, they were done enough.
You would think the steak would be the main attraction.... not when I found fresh corn on the cob (well it was fresh several days ago) and found that I could not make cole slaw... that's when it got interesting.
I realized that I have not fried cabbage (what I would have used for slaw) in a long time.... so I did. Olive oil and sesame oil in the pan. Then the cabbage. A little soy sauce to finish and... it was too salty. So, I began again. No oil, just cabbage and Chinese 5 spice... just little. When this softened I added back the first batch... just right!!
For me, the cabbage and corn were more exciting than the steak... actually half of each steak is left for salad or Mexican another night.
Now, that's eatin' !!
