One in a million

We live in the land of deer. It is not unusual to see more than 100 deer between here and the pizza place that is only about 12 miles from here. The land of deer is putting it mildly!!

The one thing that you never see even in the land of deer are fawns. You see young deer; but generally it's after several months with barely a few spots remaining.

Yesterday was the exception. Just at the end of our property, as we were leaving in the car for town, a doe stepped into the road...not an unusual sight. But there was something different about her stance. It was like she was guarding the road.

Off to the side of the road two figures moved. Rod and I could not understand why two rabbits were following the deer...were we ever wrong. It was not two rabbits. It was two fawns. Tiny things. About the size of a big Chihuahua.

We watched for a few seconds until the doe ran into the woods with one of the fawns: the other had retreated in the original direction. As we drove past we saw her coming back in the direction of the road: presumably to get the other baby.

Someone told me a little later that these babies were problably one a few days old. We figured that the doe was not happy with where they had been born and was moving them to a safer place...she was headed for the big revine where we know a lot of deer spend their time.

They were long gone by the time we returned. I don't expect to see them again until later this Fall.

I'll count this as one of the special memories that I'll always have of the wildlife in the Hills.
